Sizing a supply

How much food is enough?

Two weeks per person is where most households should start. That covers almost every outage, storm or supply disruption on record in the United States. One month per person is a comfortable second step, and the price per day drops as kits get larger.

What does "covers 1 person for 14 days" mean?

Two thousand calories a day for fourteen days, from that one kit, for one adult. Children under ten usually need around two thirds of that. Hard physical work in cold weather needs more.

Do I buy one kit per person?

Yes. Set your household on any page and the cards count the kits and the total for you.

Shelf life and storage

Is the 25 year shelf life real?

It is the manufacturer's stated figure for sealed #10 cans stored cool and dry, under 75°F. A garage that hits 110°F in summer will shorten it. Opened cans keep for about a year with the lid on.

Where should I keep it?

Inside the house, low and dark: a closet floor, under a bed, the bottom of a pantry. Not the attic, not the car.

Cooking

Do I need a stove?

No. Every meal rehydrates with water. Hot water is better, cold water works. A kettle on a camp stove is the easiest setup; a cup and patience is the fallback.

How much water does cooking take?

About one cup per serving, roughly half a gallon per person per day on top of drinking water. Our water guide walks through the full count.

Within two business days from Reno, Nevada. Freight kits take 5 to 7 days. Details on the shipping page.

Unopened, within 30 days, for a full refund. See returns.
